Abiola Ajimobi Technical University, formerly known as the First Technical University, Ibadan, is a state-owned institution and Nigeria’s first technical university. Situated in Oyo State, the university was approved by the National Universities Commission (NUC) in 2012 and officially commenced academic operations in 2017.
Initially named First Technical University, the institution was later renamed Abiola Ajimobi Technical University by Governor Seyi Makinde as a tribute to Abiola Ajimobi, the former Governor of Oyo State, who played a crucial role in its establishment. The university was created to provide students with practical skills, technical knowledge, and entrepreneurial abilities, ensuring they become leaders in science, technology, and engineering disciplines.
Tech-U is designed to offer a dynamic learning environment, with a strong focus on innovation, industrial partnerships, and skill acquisition. Its goal is to bridge the gap between academic theory and real-world technical applications, preparing graduates to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving job market.
The institution is led by Tunde J. Afolabi as its Chancellor, while Professor Adesola Ajayi serves as the Vice-Chancellor. With a growing community of over 1,000 academic staff, the university continues to expand its research capabilities and industry collaborations.
Located in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, Tech-U operates an urban campus that houses modern facilities, laboratories, research centers, and innovation hubs. Its official colors, Orange and Green, symbolize energy, creativity, and growth, reflecting the university’s commitment to technological advancement and sustainable development.
The university is widely recognized for its high standards of academic excellence and technical education. As a fast-growing institution, Tech-U maintains an active online presence through its official website, tech-u.edu.ng, where students and researchers can access information about programs, admissions, and institutional updates.
##History and Establishment
The concept of establishing a specialized technical university in Oyo State emerged in 2012, under the administration of Governor Abiola Ajimobi. The primary objective was to create an institution that would integrate technology, practical training, and entrepreneurship into higher education, ensuring graduates are equipped with industry-relevant skills.
Following several years of planning, consultations, and legislative approvals, Tech-U was officially established in 2017, becoming Nigeria’s first state-owned technical university. The university was designed to emphasize hands-on learning and industry collaboration, setting it apart from traditional universities that focus primarily on theoretical education.
