Overview and History of Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil

##Introduction Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology (ADUST), formerly known as Kano University of Science and Technology (KUST), is a prominent state-owned institution located in Wudil, Kano State, Nigeria. Established in 2001, the university has been dedicated to advancing education in science, technology, and engineering. It is a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities, reflecting its commitment to academic excellence. ##Historical Background The inception of the university dates back to 1988 when the Kano State government initiated plans to establish a higher education institution focused on science and technology. A task force led by Professor Ibrahim H. Umar, the former Vice Chancellor of Bayero University, Kano, was formed to explore this initiative. The task force submitted its recommendations in February 1988, advocating for the creation of the university. Subsequently, a technical committee was inaugurated in July 1989 to further evaluate the proposal. The university officially commenced academic activities in 2001 under the name Kano University of Science and Technology (KUST). In 2022, in recognition of significant contributions from its chancellor, Aliko Dangote, the institution was renamed Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil. ##Academic Structure and Programs ADUST began with two faculties: the Faculty of Agriculture and Agricultural Technology and the Faculty of Science. Over the years, it has expanded to six faculties, which include: Faculty of Agriculture and Agricultural Technology (FAAT) Faculty of Computing and Mathematical Sciences (FACMS) Faculty of Earth and Environmental Sciences (FAEES) Faculty of Engineering (FAENG) Faculty of Science (FASCI) Faculty of Science and Technical Education (FASTE) The university offers a diverse range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs across these faculties, including disciplines such as Agricultural Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Architecture, and Microbiology. This broad spectrum of courses is designed to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in their respective fields. ##The University Library The University Library, established in 2001, plays a pivotal role in supporting the institution's teaching, learning, and research activities. It achieves this by systematically acquiring and organizing modern information resources pertinent to the university's academic programs. The library comprises several units, including: Circulation Unit Reference Unit Serials Unit E-Library Section These units collectively ensure that students and faculty have access to a vast array of information and research materials, thereby fostering an environment conducive to academic excellence. ##Leadership As of 2025, the Vice Chancellor of ADUST is Professor Musa Tukur Yakasai. Under his leadership, the university has witnessed significant developments, including infrastructural expansion and academic advancements. Professor Yakasai has been an advocate for enhanced educational funding and has commended the Kano State government's commitment to allocating substantial portions of the state budget to the education sector. ##Recent Developments In February 2025, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf inspected ongoing and abandoned projects at the university, emphasizing the state's dedication to improving educational infrastructure. During this visit, the governor approved an additional 100 hectares of land for the university's expansion, aiming to accommodate the growing student population and the introduction of new academic programs.
