##Establishment and Evolution
Kingsley Ozumba (K.O.) Mbadiwe University, located in Ogboko, Ideato South Local Government Area of Imo State, Nigeria, was officially established on February 18, 2021, through the enactment of the Kingsley Ozumba (K.O.) Mbadiwe University (Establishment) Law No. 1 of 2021 by the Imo State government. This legislation repealed the earlier Eastern Palm University (Establishment) Law No. 13 of 2016, effectively transforming the defunct Eastern Palm University into K.O. Mbadiwe University. The National Universities Commission (NUC) recognized this transition, acknowledging K.O. Mbadiwe University as the 42nd state-owned university in Nigeria and the 143rd in the Nigerian University System.

The university's mandate is to foster the advancement of learning in Imo State and Nigeria at large, providing opportunities for higher education to all individuals irrespective of race, creed, or gender. Its specific objectives include:
Offering diverse, quality learning opportunities for both undergraduate and postgraduate students to enhance their intellectual and personal development.
Providing high-quality academic, professional, and vocational training to enrich the state's and nation's human resources.
Encouraging academic research that contributes to human knowledge and societal development.
Promoting active participation of staff and students in local, national, and international affairs.

##Academic Programs and Accreditation
K.O. Mbadiwe University offers a range of academic programs across various faculties. In October/November 2021, the NUC conducted an accreditation exercise, granting full accreditation to several programs, including Accounting, Business Administration, English and Literary Studies, History and International Studies, Computer Science, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Political Science, and Psychology. Economics and Sociology received interim accreditation status.
In June 2024, the university achieved another milestone by securing full NUC accreditation for Computer Science, Economics, and Sociology programs. Further expanding its academic offerings, in September 2024, the NUC approved the establishment of full-time programs in Medicine (MBBS), Nursing Science (B.NSc.), Medical Laboratory Science (B.MLS), Law (LL.B.), Information Technology (B.Sc.), Cyber Security (B.Sc.), Public Health (B.Sc.), and Environmental Health Science (B.Sc.), to commence in the 2024/2025 academic session.
##Leadership
The Vice-Chancellor of K.O. Mbadiwe University is Professor Ikechukwu N.S. Dozie. Under his leadership, the university has achieved significant milestones, including securing full accreditation for various programs and expanding academic offerings. Professor Dozie has credited these successes to the support from the Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, and the dedication of the university staff.
##Ownership and Governance
The ownership of K.O. Mbadiwe University has been a subject of legal and political discourse. Initially established as Eastern Palm University during the tenure of former Governor Rochas Okorocha, the institution's ownership was contested. In December 2021, the NUC officially recognized the Imo State government as the rightful owner, presenting the operational license to Governor Hope Uzodimma. This resolution aimed to expand access to university education in the state and honor the legacy of K.O. Mbadiwe, a prominent philanthropist.
