MICROBIOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF PUBLIC SWIMMING POOL(A CASE STUDY OF BLESSED LOUNGE AND G-NESS 2020)

ABSTRACT/DESCRIPTION

Microbial contamination of swimming pool water poses public health risks to swimmers and others who come into direct contact with such pools. There has been an increase in the patronage of swimming pool, for sport and recreation and therefore the need to investigate the pools compliance with sanitary standard. The microbial quality of some public swimming pools in ozoro Delta State Nigeria was investigated to determine possible risks of infections swimmers. Two swimming pools (Blessed Lounge and G-ness 2020) were investigated for their microbial qualities. Water samples from the pool were cultured. Results obtained from this study showed that the microbial counts for the swimming samples ranged from 1.1 x 102to 3.5 x 102cfu/g Bacterial and fungal isolate were obtained and identified using Gram’s Staining, microscopy and Biochemical test. The isolates include: E.coli, Salmonella Typhi, staphylococcus sp, E.feacalis, peptosreptococcus sp, Bacillus spp, vibn cholera and Shigella spp. The results of the study indicated that the total viable bacteria count of all the pool water exceeded the acceptable limits. All the two pools were contaminated by E.coli, Samonella typhi, Shigella and Vibro chlora. The high microbial loads and the types of microorganisms isolated from the pools show that contaminated swimming pools can constitute a serious public health hazard to the users and there is need to improve monitoring by pool health authorities, improve pool disinfection standards and educate swimmers on hygiene before entering pools.
